Estimate softener capacity

Use your household size and tested hardness to create a starting number before comparing replacement systems.

Changing units converts the entered value automatically.

Starting capacity estimate

≈ 32,000 grains
15grains / gal3,600grains / day25,2007-day load

Planning formula: people × gallons per person per day × hardness in gpg × 7 days × 1.25, rounded up to 1,000 grains. Seven days and the 25% allowance are planning assumptions, not recommended controller settings. This does not account for iron, manganese, peak flow, household changes, or the manufacturer’s rated capacity. Confirm the water test and specifications before buying.

Example: 4 people × 60 gallons × 15 gpg = 3,600 grains/day; × 7 × 1.25 = 31,500, rounded to 32,000 grains. Compare usable capacity at the intended salt dose and required service flow—not only the model’s advertised grain number.

How to read the estimate

Capacity is one part of the decision.

The estimate starts with the hardness load created by people and water use, then adds a small reserve. Your actual system choice also depends on the incoming water test, iron or manganese, household peak flow, regeneration settings, and the manufacturer’s rated capacity.

01 · Hardness

Use a tested number when possible.

City-water reports and well-water tests may use mg/L as calcium carbonate. The calculator converts that value to grains per gallon for the estimate.

02 · Capacity

Compare usable capacity, not a headline.

Product labels and settings can describe capacity differently. Check the rated performance and regeneration efficiency before comparing models.

03 · Conditions

Well water may need more than softening.

Sediment, iron, pressure, and prefiltration can change the right equipment path. A larger softener does not solve every upstream problem.

Common sizing questions

What the number can—and cannot—tell you.

What does a water softener size calculator estimate?

It creates a starting grain-capacity estimate from household size, water use, and tested hardness. Confirm the result against the manufacturer’s rated capacity and the complete water test.

How do I convert mg/L hardness to grains per gallon?

For a planning estimate, divide mg/L as calcium carbonate by 17.1. If the water has iron, manganese, or another condition, use the appropriate treatment guidance rather than relying on hardness conversion alone.

Should I buy the system with the largest grain number?

Not automatically. Compare usable capacity, peak flow, salt and water efficiency, serviceability, warranty, installation, and the actual water conditions. Bigger is not a substitute for fit.

Is this also a water softener settings calculator?

No. This tool estimates a starting capacity for comparison. Programming hardness, reserve, salt dose, and regeneration timing is model-specific. Record the current values and use the owner’s manual.
